Yes! In the 18th century, when India was in the shackles of slavery, not only warriors and armies, but our saints also took part in this fight. First fought with the Mughals and then with the British.
This glorious history was depicted by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in his classic work “Anandamath”, on which Hemant Kumar also made a film in 1962. Now another big film is going to bring this great saga to the silver screen!
1765 – TurningThe turning point in Indian history
The year 1765 was very important for India because it was the year the British implemented their first Diwani (revenue collection) system in Bengal.
- The British made the tax system so harsh that farmers were forced to give their entire crop to the British government.
- Taxes started being collected in cash, which shook the entire social structure of the villages.
- In 1770, there was a terrible famine in Bengal, which made the situation even more horrific.
Our sanyasi saints stood up against this injustice and launched an armed rebellion against the British!
